Here’s my beef! “Unless we start doing …”

An F&L The European Freight and Logistics Leaders’ Forum series of short personal comments on the global freight logistics market

Here’s my beef!  “Unless we start doing …”

Amazon is truly committed to sustainability therefore we are tackling multiple business priorities by addressing how we conduct our long haul transport.

Results to date of using end-to-end intermodal routes to transport customer packages and inventory:

  • Europe’s unique geographic landscape and infrastructure mean that intermodal routes via sea or rail are often a more efficient and even faster mode of transport. That is why Amazon has been expanding the use of intermodal lanes to transport packages and inventory across Europe in recent years.
  • Closing 2025, Amazon’s European intermodal network has more than 500 lanes and now moves twice as many loads as it did three years ago, achieving approximately 50% fewer carbon emissions. In 2025, more than 35% of inventory transfers on lanes exceeding 500km across the Amazon EU network are performed using intermodal transport.
  • Amazon is also using sea and rail transportation to deliver customer orders. In 2025, across Europe, we transported 170 million packages via sea and rail, representing 45% growth compared to the previous year.

Amazon has a very ambitious plan for the future. We continue to expand into new lanes and geographies, and we are already seeing the benefits of using combined transport. We enable sustainable transport, optimize resources as trailers travel the longest distances by rail or sea, innovate by finding new ways to connect volumes, and create economies of scale.

By doing we are also able to scale improvement in long haul transport.  We are building option-rich partnerships which will deliver to our customers when the driver shortage we have discussed for decades returns.  We are minimising emissions now, not because the legislation finally caught up.  We are not contributing to increased congestion on the roads.  By doing we are also meeting amazing people who are helping us create new partnerships which can handle not only today, but also tomorrow.

I hope you will join me and help transform European logistics by connecting our volumes and working with partners to utilise the very best mix of modes for us all.   See you online with F&L on 9 April.
